Scott Jeter sat behind me in Coach Blackburn’s history class in 10th grade. I think it was 4th hour, where we had lunch in the middle and then came back for the rest of class.
One day, I was wearing a hoodie with the string around the hood still in place. Scott started pulling on it, causing me to get yanked back in the seat. Coach Blackburn looked over at us but didn’t say anything. Scott kept pulling on the string, but I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to get us in trouble.
Lunch time came and Coach told the class we could leave. Everyone got up from their seats and left, including Scott. I tried to get up, but Scott had tied the string of my hoodie to the desk and I was stuck. I remember Coach saying “Johnson, are you going to lunch?” I replied with something like “yes, I just need to take off my sweatshirt.”
Somehow, I managed to slide out of the bottom of my sweatshirt and go to lunch. After we got back from lunch, Scott and I laughed pretty hard. He finally untied it from the desk. After that, I was always concerned at lunch time because I never knew what Scott might have been up to.
Like most of my friends from the Class of 84, I lost track of Scott and only recently learned of his passing. He was a great guy who I am sure is missed by many.
Tim, What a great story and memory of Scott! Thank you for sharing! Scott certainly left his signature pranks for many of us to remember! He will be missed at this reunion.
